Asus probably stole a license to distribute a font, and then it crashed Photoshop

I have experienced crashing due to a font that was installed on my PC in Windows.

In Photoshop 2025 while working on a photo, I add a type layer and go to the font dropdown at the top. I see alphabetical list of fonts.

When I simply browse through a font list in Photoshop, as I mouse over a particular font, it immediately exits with no crash window.

I talked to Adobe about it, and I can make the crash stop by deleted the CT Font cache folder, which is here: “C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2026\CT Font Cache”

However, it still throws an error when I pass over this font.

It’s name is: AniMe Vision - MB_EN Regular.ttf and it has the following notice:

Full name: AniMe Vision - MB_EN

Version 1.007;October 3, 2024

FontCreator 14.0.0.2790 64-bit

ASUS Design Center

This font is made with the home edition of FontCreator. You may not use this font for commercial purposes.

Please sue ASUS you guys.

And I will sue you for crashing Photoshop with your terrible font!

Can I upload it here?

I wonder, did the font come preinstalled with your computer?

To clarify, we are not responsible for fonts created by third parties, even if they were made with our software. Also, with FontCreator Home Edition (version 14 and earlier), commercial use of fonts created with that edition is not allowed, which is why that notice appears in the font’s metadata.

Crashes in Photoshop are almost always caused by a specific corrupted or malformed font. We’re happy to take a look and let you know what’s wrong with it, but please don’t upload the font publicly on the forum.

Instead, send the font file to [email protected] and we’ll examine it privately.

Once we’ve reviewed it, we can let you know what the problem is and whether the font can be repaired.

I sent it. I think it’s from ASUS Armoury Crate.

I’ve inspected the font you sent, and it does not appear to be technically corrupt, so I cannot explain why Photoshop crashes when hovering over it. The issue is most likely on Adobe’s side or caused by something specific in how Photoshop parses this particular font.

The internal name records of the font show:

  • Copyright notice owned by ASUS
  • License field stating: “This font is made with the home edition of FontCreator. You may not use this font for commercial purposes.”
  • Vendor: ASUS Design Center
  • Created with: FontCreator 14 Home Edition

This strongly suggests the font was created using a Home Edition, which cannot legally be used for commercial purposes.

If the font was produced within ASUS or distributed as part of its products, that would indeed be a violation of our license agreement. I will contact them privately to sort this out.

Find someone with Photoshop and install it sometime. Maybe there’s something your software did wrong? I have had several bad fonts over the years. I had some TTFs from the 1990s that would act strange.

Thanks for sending me the test font replacement.

That appears to have fixed it. I moused by the font and nothing bad happened in Photoshop this time. I briefly changed a character to this font and it appeared normally on screen and in the shape of the unusual font.

Before doing this test, I uninstalled the bad one in Windows settings. I then renamed the fixed one to be exactly the same as the defective one. Then I installed it for all users.

Test 1 was to run ASUS Armoury Crate and look at its use of the font. It appeared to use the fixed font without issues.

Test 2 was as described above with Photoshop 2025.

Perhaps you can determine what could have gone wrong in the rogue font to cause the crash in Photoshop … the people who were helping me at Adobe were quite unable to help. I had a feeling it was something to do with an error in the font itself.

I inspected both fonts with several validation tools and sanitizers, and they are perfectly valid. This makes me suspect the issue lies within Photoshop itself. If ASUS is distributing this font, more users may encounter the same problem.

I had the same problem in Photoshop with infamous Arabic fonts like Amiri and Aref Ruqaa which both produced by pioneered Arab type designers, and the problem occurs when changing any font from the font drop menu in PS when the mousse hover on them during scrolling, untill now I don’t see any bug in those fonts and it seems a Photoshop bug, specially that I discovered in its 2025-2026 is buggy with some fonts while in its 2020 version hasn’t.
