Blank characters in Windows insert symbol map

Hello,
I have created a set of symbols, in consecutive order in Font Creator. When I display the symbol list in Word, using the insert symbol function, there are a large number of spaces between characters that were created later in Font Creator table. How can I create a symbol set without these blank characters being inserted in the Windows font Symbol table?

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Martin Colwell.

In Font Creator, Edit menu, Select Incomplete, and delete the empty glyphs.

When I display the symbol list in Word, using the insert symbol function, there are a large number of spaces between characters that were created later in Font Creator table.

That is very interesting.

I use Word 97 on a Windows 98 PC and a problem which I have had is that empty glyphs, even though mapped, do not show when using the Insert | Symbol facility and I have used WordPad and an Alt sequence to get them into action, then used copy and paste to get them into Word 97!

The reason for having those empty glyphs is so as to have correctly-sized spaces so as to set out combination border units and so as to set out percussion music symbols using my Quest text font. The spaces are at U+E50F and U+E4DF respectively. They are not the same size as each other and neither is the same size as the U+0020 space.

Maybe later versions of Word work differently or maybe I am not using Word 97 as I could or maybe I am not setting some flag in the font header.

Here is a link to the font in case anyone would like to have a look as to whether the special spaces mentioned above show in later versions of Word using the Insert | Symbol facility.

I wonder.

If a font is created as a Symbol font and all the maps are sequential why would there be any spaces in anything especially between characters?

Ahh. “later” Did you add the symbols to an existing alphabetic font? Did you map them sequentially or did you put them into existing blank glyphs?

Understandably, if the font is created not as a Symbol, you might have missing letters or something (a, c, d,…). If your maps are serial they should be together I would think.
