Custom font characters not working on a Mac

I work for the Ontario Geological Survey and, for our maps, we have a number of custom fonts that contain custom glyphs representing geological structures. In the past, we’ve been using ESRI ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro (expensive) to create our maps but we’re in the process of switching to QGIS (free). These ESRI products are available only for Windows whereas QGIS is available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

This question is a bit premature but …

We have a student working with us on his M.Sc. and he uses a Mac. With the exception of one, of our many font files, his Mac displays our fonts as A, B, C rather than the custom characters we’ve created. Although this is still in discussion, it sounds like I’ll be tasked with correcting the situation because I’m the only person with this software (or any font software for that matter) and some degree of experience with it.

Given that one of the font files works on the Mac, it appears that it is possible for me to make the corrections but I don’t know why one font is fine and another is not. What should I be looking for in the “bad” fonts to see what needs to be corrected?

Regrettably, I don’t have a Mac but I will likely have access to someone with a Mac who can do testing when I get started on the project.

I assume the fonts are made with FontCreator?

If so, then send me a couple of those fonts, preferably one that works and two that fail, and I will look into it.
