hi there, i’m a newbie to font creating.
i’ve managed to create my first font using FontCreator, but i’m experiencing a couple of problems…
the first problem is when i come to using my font in Microsoft Word, the apostrophe ( ’ ) and quotation ( " ) characters do not display properly. they just revert back to Times New Roman, although all the rest of the characters work fine.
why is this ?
my second problem is that my font does not display in AutoCAD.
i select my font and it displays fine in the text editing window but in the drawing itself it just appears as a different, very basic font.
i have also tried my font in Photoshop, MS Paint, Excel etc. and it all works fine.
A few years ago someone else had a similar problem with a font and AutoCad. I remember the AutoNaming wizard solved that issue. Let me know if it works for your font as well, otherwise do send it to me and I’ll try to find a solution.
On the Format, Settings, Ranges tab, calculate Unicode Ranges and code pages. Uninstall and reinstall the font. You may have to reboot Windows too. Some programs use font caches.
i had already used the autonaming wizard when i first created the font. i have just run through the wizard again and reinstalled the font but still no luck.
thanks anyway.
i apologise, i completely missed that question in the faqs.
although, wouldn’t this issue just cause it to display my fonts ‘notdef’ glyph, not the quotation marks from a completely different font ?
anyhow, i’ll have a little play and add some new glyphs.
in the ‘Ranges’ tab, hitting ‘calculate’ under ‘unicode character ranges’ doesn’t seem to do anything. also, the option to calculate ‘code page character ranges’ is not available.
am i doing something wrong ?

I notice that the value in the contents and layout version field must be greater than 0 for calculate to work. I always use version 3, assuming it to be the most recent version, but I don’t know what the differences are.
It actually is the version of the contents and layout for the OS/2 table. And yes, version 3 is the most recent version. I guess it is pretty safe to use version 3 for Unicode fonts as that version is in use since October 2002. Maybe some older/ outdated applications might not support it. However for Symbol fonts I strongly recommend to stick to version 1, because Height and Cap Height would otherwise be calculated as 0.
with regards to the problem with quotation marks in Word, i have now added new glyphs for the ‘curly quotes’ etc. and everything now works fine
with regards to the issue with AutoCAD, i have noticed that the font does display if ‘bold’ is selected. this seems a little odd but it’s good enough for me.

When you say “if ‘bold’ is selected” do you mean “if ‘bold’ is selected in the settings within the font” or do you mean “if ‘bold’ is selected from within AutoCAD when using the font”?
The reason that I ask is that I am wondering if perhaps your font has thin lines and maybe AutoCAD will not render them.
I produced a font with thin lines, based upon some designs which I tried years ago with a computer graph plotter.
I wonder if you might like to download a copy and install it on your computer and try it out in AutoCAD and observe whether it renders or whether it needs using bold in order for it to render.
