Minimized Test Font Window Can No Longer Be Accessed

My eternal gratitude for anyone who can recommend a solution to a problem I am experiencing with the Test Font function.

First, the basics:

Program: FontCreator 6.2 Home Version, downloaded July 2011.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
System Type: 64 bit

By default, the Test Font (TF) window activated by the Test Font button (on the Standard Toolbar:

) always appeared on top of the Font Creator program window, completely covering it. While the TF window was open, no other operations in FontCreator were allowed or even accessible; In order to return to FontCreator and resume viewing, editing, etc… I had to close the TF window first.

Two days ago, I clicked on the TF button to view a font I was working on and typed in the TF window as usual. When done, I went to click on the red “X” in the upper right window corner to close out the application, but accidently hit the “minimize” icon next to it instead. Since the TF window was still open (just minimized), clicking on any function , button, glyph, etc in the FontCreator window was impossible. Eventually, I had to hit the escape key to exit from TF mode.

Ever since, the TF window has remained minimized whenever I try to access it, and it is nowhere to be found. There’s no small minimized rectangle within the FontCreator window, on the taskbar, behind the taskbar, on my desktop, or anywhere else I can think to look. Since I can’t find the minimized TF icon, I can’t maximize it in order to use TF, or do anything else while the window is open (somewhere). The only thing I can do now after clicking on TF button is hit escape so that I can return to the FontCreator program.

I’ve tried hitting F5, alt+F5, cntl+F5, tried accessing the TF function via the “Font” menu, searched Forum Topics, and searched the net for solutions. I can’t find any kind of “reset to default” settings for FontCreator in tools or options or on the FAQ webpage. I’ve included some screen shots below to show what I see before and after the test font button is depressed:

Before:

Header Bar in FontCreator window is a deeper blue since it is active, font workspace is small but not minimized, full workspace visible, no horizontal/vertical scrollbars in FC.

After:

Header Bar in FC window is pale blue since FC is not accessible while FT window is engaged. No minimized FT icon in FC workspace or task bar. Still no scrollbars so full FC workspace is visible.

Any input about this problem is greatly appreciated. I would just uninstall FC 6.2 and then reinstall so that I could go back to default settings but I’m not sure that would really work, and I don’t know if the activation key I got when I purchased FC 6.2 is still valid. Ideas? Thank you!

I wonder if you maximize the screens if that wouldn’t show everything underneath.

As far as I know, the Font Test dialog can’t be minimized.

What happens when you move the main screen away from the center of your screen, and then hit F5?

Thank you for you interest and for your suggestion. Unfortunately, maximizing the FC window doesn’t reveal any additional applications. Since the FC window freezes after the Test Font button is pressed, it’s impossible to move around the screen to look after accessing the Test Font dialogue.

Erwin, dank u voor uw snelle reactie. I moved the FontCreator window to the side of my screen and hit F5, but still can’t find any sign of the Test Font dialogue. After hitting F5, it’s impossible to move, minimize, maximize, or access in any way the FontCreator window, so I can’t look within or under the FC program for the Test Font dialogue.

I’ve attached two screen shots of my attempt. Totheside.jpg shows the FC window immediately after I hit F5. You can see the green progress bar that appears as the Test Font dialogue is loading. Totheside2.jpg shows my screen about a minute after I hit F5. I could not manipulate or access the FC window, and there’s still no sign of the Test Font dialogue.

Note: Use the content below at your own risk

If you happen to be familiar with the Windows Registry, then you could open it and go to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\High-Logic\FontCreator\6.1\Position\Test Window

Here you’ll find an entry named Position. If you remove it, and then restart FontCreator it should be reset to the default position. I’m still curious about the value of the Position entry…

If that won’t work, then contact us by sending an email to customer support.

Erwin –

Your last suggestion fixed the problem! The Test Font window now displays like it’s supposed to. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to look into this.

I’ve included a screen shot of the Regedit window as it looked before I deleted the “position” entry. After I deleted it, only the “default” entry remained. I restarted my computer, activated FC, and the test window appeared as soon as I clicked on the TF button.

Please let me know if you need any addition information from me regarding this issue. And thank you again for your assistance in solving it.
