Does MainType support Type1 and OTF, including their preview, in Windows 98SE without any additional software (e.g. Adobe Type Manager) installed?
I.e. does it have its own interpreting and rendering engine for non-TTF?

Andres,
Good question, might be something for the FAQ.
MainType depends on system-level support for all font types, either from the operating system, Adobe Type Manager Deluxe (no longer available) or Adobe Type Manager Light (ATM Light). More information about ATM Light (a free font utility from Adobe) can be found here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/atmlight/main.html
Because Windows 95/ 98/ ME and NT 4.0 have no built-in support for PostScript Type 1 fonts and OpenType fonts, ATM (Light) is required when you want support for these fonts.
Windows 2000/ XP and Vista have native support for all font types.
It is just a matter of time, but PostScript Type 1 fonts are phasing out.

This is mainly due to the lack of Unicode support and the fact that PostScript Type 1 font files are not cross-platform. OpenType fonts are the future; I guess we all have to move forward.
