The SAMPLE Panel Shows Glyphs I Cannot Access

I’m having trouble with a particular font from MyFonts. The vendor assures me that all glyphs are present in the font and that it works properly for them. On MT, the Sample panel shows many glyphs that do not appear on the Characters panel. I cannot access these glyphs from any program that I’ve tried (Word365, PhotoShop, even the Windows Character Map). Character Map UWP does display the glyphs, but will not allow me to copy them to the clipboard. I use a Windows10 machine and have never had a problem accessing glyphs prior to this.

According to MyFonts there should be 635 characters in the font. MT Character panel shows 349. Does anyone know what could be causing this discrepancy? I’ve uninstalled the font, deleted my copy and re-installed a new copy that the vendor sent to me directly. Same problem.

The font is offered by MyFonts for $0.00, if anyone would like to investigate further. The name is Wonder Light
by Fenotype. There are 12 weights in the family, but I’ve only downloaded the free one so far.

I appreciate any help!

I suspect the other glyphs are only accessible through OpenType features.

How many glyphs are shown in MainType when you switch between Character and Glyph mode in the Characters panel?

Glyph mode: 635
Character mode: 349
Does this mean that I won’t be able to use these glyphs w/o buying InDesign or similar? I usually work in InkScape or an ancient version of PSE, neither of which has a built-in glyph tool.

I did a quick search, but it is not clear to me how good OpenType support is in Inkscape. I no longer have it installed. Ask on their forums.

LibreOffice offers some support via HalfBuzz, and Affinity Publisher offers good support. Probably, that means that Affinity Designer does too.

The Affinity products have six month free trials, if Inkscape does not offer full OpenType support, but switching programs is likely to have a steep learning curve.

Inkscape is not great with alternate glyphs. We are expected to copy from Windows Character Map (I use MT instead) to copy the glyph to the clipboard, then paste it into Inkscape.

Even Word365, which I would expect to be OpenType compliant, can’t find the glyphs for this font. I know there are 3 versions of “K”, for instance, but using the Advanced tab and running through every option for stylistic sets, none of them change the character to an alternate.

Updating for anyone following. I was able to use FontForge to alter the font, then save under a new name.
When I need an alternate glyph, I switch to the revised font for those characters.

While I’m not certain if the font’s license allows modifications, it’s great that you found a solution. That said, for tasks like this, FontCreator would also be a highly suitable tool. It ensures that all font data is preserved, and you can explore its full capabilities with a 30-day trial period. It might be worth considering for future projects!

Not sure about the licensing aspect in a case like this. Clearly, the glyphs were designed to be used, as the seller kept assuring me they “worked fine” for him. It wasn’t until I challenged him to use them in Word that he agreed there is a problem with the font. The designer will be issuing a new version in the coming days.

MyFonts contacted me earlier this week to provide an updated version of the font I posted about earlier in this thread. Now I can access hundreds of glyphs that were previously inaccessible.

Tonight, I purchased two fonts from a different site that have the same issue–multiple glyphs are not accessible. I can view them in MT on the glyphs panel, but they do not appear on the character panel.

What determines which items MT shows on the character panel vs what it shows on the glyphs panel?
