The Unicode Consortium has officially released Unicode 17.0.
This new version adds 4,803 characters, bringing the grand total to 159,801 characters. Among the highlights are four newly encoded scripts:
-
Sidetic – an ancient Anatolian script used around Side in modern-day Turkey
-
Tolong Siki – a script for the Tolong Siki language of India
-
Beria Erfe – used for the Zaghawa (Beria) language of Chad and Sudan
-

As always, Unicode continues its mission to support the written languages of the world, both historic and modern, ensuring digital text can represent the full diversity of human communication.
