Variable fonts error

After modifying the strokes of variable fonts with FC, some glyphs appeared with red markings, and at the same time, these wrong glyphs could not show the effect of stroke thickness change. How to fix these errors?

It is totally fine to adjust outlines as long as the glyph layers remain compatible. The red markings are shown because the outlines are no longer compatible.

You might want to take a look at the Compatibility Issues section in this tutorial:

How to Make a Variable Font

I copied the components and stretched the strokes to ensure maximum compatibility, which usually works, but some components are still incompatible and some letter hints appear, such as S, M, O, N, etc., what do these letters mean? How should I proceed to resolve the prompt issues?

The black layer has contours for the E, while the others have a composite glyph member.

Thanks, and what does the letter “N” mean?
