[FIXED] Export/Install font hangs

Similar to another person’s bug report, but this may provide more information. It appears to be repeatable.

Cancel also hangs.
The above also happens with Export Font.

Had to kill the process using the Task Manager.

I imagine there is something wrong with my font to cause this to happen.

My system: Windows 11 Pro (up-to-date, build 22621.ni_release.220506-1250)
RAM 32 GB
CPU 12-core

FontCreator 15 Professional

I will cooperate if you want me to provide logs etc. Just tell me what you want me to do.

Do you still have this issue with this unofficial update?

https://www.high-logic.com/tmp/fontcreator/FontCreatorSetup15.0.0.2984-x64.exe

If so, then please send the font project to me, so I can try to reproduce the problem.

The result was only slightly different with the unofficial update, as shown by the screen captures.

Export Font fails as before:

Cancelling Export Font fails as before:
Cancel Export fails.jpg
Font Installation appears to fail as before…
Install also fails.jpg
However, when I cancel the Installation, FontCreator recovers.

Attaching offending project file…

Thank you for sharing the font project.

We have found an issue in the exporter which causes an endless loop. We will fix it asap.

I’m very pleased to have contributed in this small way.

This update should solve the issue:

https://www.high-logic.com/tmp/fontcreator/FontCreatorSetup15.0.0.2985-x64.exe

Let us know your results.

Yes, thanks. That fixed the problem. Now I can get back to developing the font.

Excellent service!

I am glad to know the problem is solved!

There have been a lot of bug fixes in the last official release on April 25th.

Is it time to update the Changelog?

Almost, as there have been so many changes under the hood, we need to make sure we didn’t brake any vital functionality…

That’s interesting.

The Changelog shows
Version 15.0.0.2974 (25 April, which is in the future)

and thanks to you, I now have
Version 15.0.0.2985, which I suppose is an unofficial release (beta ?).

If problems arise, I’ll let you know.

This is indeed an unofficial update.

The previous official release was a month ago.

I think I may have stumbled upon an undesirable effect within the “Test Font” panel.

If I keep the panel window narrow, my developing font shows up as it should, but if I extend the window width, some lines change to a different font.

Similarly, if I start typing a new line of text, it looks correct at first, but at some point as the line length increases, it changes the whole line to a different font.

The problem seems to require that certain letters be included, specifically, f or j. In my font, these glyphs overlap the space of adjacent glyphs, which may or may not be significant.

In one experiment, exactly 34 f’s or 34 j’s were displayed correctly, but the 35th made the whole line change font.

I’m using an unofficial release of FontCreator Professional, Version 15.0.0.2985.

I forgot to say that the problem does not occur in Microsoft Word.

It seems to have something to do with wrapping text.
I’ve also discovered that it doesn’t just apply to f and j.

I hope this is helpful.

I am able to reproduce the problem, but since we use a standard Windows control, we can’t do anything about it.

We could replace the component with a RichEdit based one, but that might cause other problems as it allows you to paste formatted text.

We recommend to use the Test Web Font, as it is also way better with complex scripts like Arabic.

Thanks for your reply and explanation.
I can live with this OK.

Erwin
You will probably remember that I am using an unofficial release of FontCreator Professional (Version 15.0.0.2985 (64-bit)), and that I said I would report any problems that arose.

I’ve been doing a lot of glyph editing and sometimes it goes wrong. I’m not sure what sequence of actions causes the problem, but I can explain what I’m doing and try to describe the effect. It doesn’t happen every single time, however.

With the Preview panel monitoring what I’m doing…
I open a glyph for editing.
Using Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V, I superimpose another glyph for comparison and matching parts.
I use the mouse to move contours by the control points.
I may move selected groups of contours together, and create or delete points. I also use the “Optimise Contours” feature.
I might move the superimposed glyph. Eventually, I intend to remove it.
I frequently switch between contour mode and point mode.

When it goes wrong, there is a duplicate of the superimposed glyph shown in the editing window that does not appear in the preview.
The name shown on the tab changes to the name of the superimposed glyph, though I’m not sure whether that happens every time.
On one occasion, the editing window appeared to have a fragment of a previous edit to a different glyph.

I’ve been able to recover by closing the tab, and if necessary, using Ctrl-Z to return to a previous state.

As I’m using an unofficial development version, I was ready for problems, but I regard it as a privilege.
I hope these notes are helpful.

Regards

Maybe you have more than one glyph in the Glyph panel? This can be accomplished with the Text tool, but there are also some other ways. It is sometimes very convenient to have more than one glyph in the Glyph panel. While you can only edit one at a time, you can easily switch between glyphs by clicking an inactive one. Maybe this is what happened?

Another thing that might have happened is that you have used a Mask, but I think that is unlikely as it does not fully match what you described.

I’m not completely sure that explains what happened.

Suppose it happens again and I immediately save the project file; would you like me to send it to you?
