How to increase the weight of a font family

Hello. I am a newbie and so I am hoping someone can help. I have a free OTF font (which has Regular and Bold “normal” and italic versions) that I use on my ebook reader, which I like very much but would like the Regular versions to have more weight. Is this something that Font Creator can do? If so,

How would I go about selecting all the glyphs in a set at once and increasing their weight?
How would I preview on screen the effects of any changes I make?

Thank you

If you have the Professional Edition of FontCreator, you can use a Glyph Transformation script such as “Book to Demibold.” You would experiment with different values in the the script until the got the desired result. The Preview Toolbar can be used to see the results. Follow the general advice in the tutorial to copy the glyphs to the clipboard in the glyph overview before applying the transform, then paste them back afterwards, because there is no undo for Transformations, but there is an undo for paste.

If you’re using the Home Edition, its a labour intensive, but not difficult process, to adjust each glyph by the same amount in Points mode, by selecting nodes with the lasso tool, then using the shortcut keys: Right, Shift Right, or Ctrl + Cursor Keys, to move nodes by the same amount (10, 100, or 1 funit respectively), then increase the advance width to match.

A quick and dirty method that I cannot vouche for as I haven’t tried it, might be to display the regular font at a large size in a text editor, apply the bold attribute, but with the bold version uninstalled. Then the Windows rasterizer will create a faux bold version that you can take screen shots of and paste each glyph into FontCreator.
